Vorry,

All Arapahope Members who want to support the Health Care Team - Action Alert

Kathleen Odefey and Deb Dobersen are asking for your help in their support of HB11-1069.

They are both testifying to support this bill which will require that all schools provide 150 minutes of physical activity per week. Kathleen is a former teacher, and Deb is a nutritionist who works with diabetic patients. Both strongly feel that physical activity makes learning more effective and contributes to the overall health of Colorado's children. The sponsors of the bill, Rep Massey and Rep Fields, are recommending they bring letters from our members who might have something relevant to say. Included below are some talking points that you could include in your letter. Kathleen can pick up your letter Sunday before the committee meeting on Monday. Please call her at 303 771-4168 as soon as possible to let her know you will have a letter she can pick up.

  • Physical activity helps control the obesity and type 2 diabetes in students
  • American Academy of Pediatrics states, "Schools are in a uniquely favorable position to increase physical activity and fitness among students" and may promote more activity throughout life.
  • Children's brain development is linked to physical fitness. (Science Daily, based on research at University of Illinos at Urbana-Champaign)
  • Children are able to pay attention better and solve problems after physical activity. http://wwwsciencedaily.com/releases/2009/01/0901281113246.htm
  • Physically fit students scored better on standardized tests in math and English. http://sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/01/090128113246htm.

People can also just write what they feel and observe. If you have a child in school and you would appreciate this law and can say something about how it would help your child, that is highly relevant and you should write it up. These letters will be handed to the committee for their review, but will not be read aloud.

You are also welcome to come to the committee meeting and watch your fellow activists at work. It should be very interesting. The meeting is Feb 7 at 1:30 pm, Room 0112 on the first floor of the capitol.
