This progress allows for a Fall 2011 grand opening in Centennial, Colorado, increasing the Swedish retailer's presence in the western United States. Until IKEA Centennial opens, customers from Colorado and beyond can shop at IKEA stores in Draper, UT and Tempe, AZ or at www.IKEA-USA.com. IKEA has retained Centennial-based Saunders Construction as the construction management firm. Other Colorado firms involved with this future IKEA store include: CLC Associates for civil design; Kimley Horn Associates as traffic consultants during the approval process; Ground Engineering providing environmental analysis and geotechnical services; Otten Johnson Robinson Neff & Ragonetti serving as local counsel; real estate brokerage firm Legend Retail Group assisting IKEA in the site selection process; Geothermal Systems of Colorado designing the geothermal component, and Miller Global selling the land. Atlanta-based GreenbergFarrow is architect responsible for store design, site planning and construction documents. "With our land purchased, team selected and site-work permit pending, we now can schedule IKEA Centennial to open Fall 2011," said Doug Greenholz, IKEA real estate director. "Construction crews soon will begin clearing and grading the site, and we look forward to breaking ground officially in a couple of months." In addition to 10,000 exclusively-designed items, IKEA Centennial will present approximately 50 different room-settings, three complete model home interiors, a supervised children's play area and a 500-seat restaurant serving Swedish specialties such as meatballs with lingonberries or salmon plates, as well as American dishes. Other family-friendly features include a 'Children's IKEA' area in the showroom, baby care rooms, preferred parking and play areas throughout the store. The 415,000 square-foot future IKEA Centennial, with approximately 1,500 parking spaces, will be built on 13.5 acres along the western side of Interstate 25 in the Park Meadows area, accessible from connections to Dry Creek Road and County Line Road exits, and will employ approximately 400 coworkers when the new store opens. The store will reflect the same unique architectural design for which IKEA stores are known worldwide. Also, IKEA Centennial will be the first U.S. IKEA store to incorporate a geothermal component as part of the heating and cooling system, so heat will be pumped either from or into the ground, depending on weather conditions. There currently are more than 300 IKEA stores in 38 countries, including 37 in the U.S. Since its 1943 founding in Sweden, IKEA has offered a wide range of home furnishings and accessories of good design and function at low prices so the majority of the people can afford them. IKEA has been ranked in FORTUNE's annual "100 Best Companies to Work For" list, Working Mother magazine's annual list of "100 Best Companies for Working Mothers" and Training magazine's annual "Top 100" ranking of companies that excel at human capital development. IKEA incorporates sustainable efforts into day-to-day business, and continually supports initiatives that benefit causes such as children and the environment. Coyote Team Volunteers NeededCentennial has received calls and reports of sightings within the City. Citizens need to be aware of their presence. The City of Centennial does not have a volunteer program but is working with WildEarth Guardians' volunteers to provide information about how to coexist with coyotes. Your assistance is needed to distribute educational information to neighborhoods and greenbelt areas identified as coyote "hot spots." Whistles are available to citizens for use as a hazing tool. To volunteer, e-mail Candice Bott, City of Centennial Coyote Management Plan Technician at cbott@centennialcolorado.com . You'll receive an e-mail from the WildEarth Guardians confirming your volunteer status. Time commitment is flexible. The Reason Why: Coyotes are adaptable predators, common in urban areas. They're tolerant of human activities, and adapt and adjust rapidly to changes in their environment. During winter and early spring the coyotes mate and find den sights while establishing their territory. It's crucial to remove all food sources from your yard, place deterrents, and haze (re-instill the natural fear of humans into the coyotes). Coyotes are watching and learning from us; we influence their behavior, and our actions help determine what the young coyotes learn. We want the new generation of coyotes to be naturally afraid of humans and not find our neighborhoods or yards a safe place to live. If you haven't done so, please talk with your children and neighbors about wildlife. Remind them not to approach or feed any wildlife and teach them what to do if wildlife approach them: Stop, do not run. Face the animal and try to look big (put arms over your head). In a firm voice, tell the animal "Go Away!" Slowly back out of the area and go tell an adult. First Wednesday, Each Month: Centennial Airport Noise Roundtable Meeting The Airport Noise Committee meets on the first Wednesday of each month at the Hotel Gold Crown Ramada, by the Air Traffic Control Tower at 7770 S Peoria St. Public comment is allowed at the start of each meeting. Essay Contest for Area Youth "If I were Mayor" essay contest for 7th graders: 7th grade students are encouraged to enter the "If I Were Mayor..." essay contest sponsored by the Colorado Municipal League (CML) and COLOTRUST. Four winners will be selected from across Colorado and will receive a certificate of achievement, a $500 savings bond and will be invited to attend the 2010 CML Conference in June to receive their award and present their essays during the Elected Officials lunch. Participants should consider if they were mayor, how would they explain the importance of municipal government to kids in their community. The contest is open to all Colorado students enrolled in the 7th grade during the 2009-10 school year. Students who are home schooled are also eligible. Essays should be between 400 and 600 words. Only one essay may be submitted per student. Essays will be judged by a committee made up of CML and COLOTRUST officials in the following areas: Essay relation to contest topic Creativity Displayed knowledge about the role of a mayor Legibility and proper use of grammar Students must include their first and last names, school and teacher's name at the top of their essays. The official entry form must also be submitted with all entries. Essays must be received by Tuesday, April 13, 2010. Winners will be notified during the middle of May 2010.
