Sixty-one current and former Colorado state legislators endorsed U.S. Senate candidate Andrew Romanoff today.

Two days after receiving the backing of two of the state's largest labor groups, today's endorsements are further evidence of Romanoff's growing momentum. An independent poll released last week showed Romanoff gaining ground on Republican front-runner Jane Norton, narrowing her lead to within the margin of error. Romanoff's opponent in the Democratic primary is losing ground in the same survey; he now trails Norton by 14 points.

Romanoff won support from a majority of the Democrats in the state legislature -- including two-thirds of those in the House of Representatives, where he served for eight years and was speaker for four. They're the ones who have worked with Romanoff most closely.

"Leadership matters, and Andrew has got it," said Rep. Joe Rice, D-Littleton, a colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves.

"I've never met an elected official with more heart, integrity, or a better work ethic," said Rep. Dianne Primavera, D-Broomfield.

"Andrew Romanoff is the epitome of what a United States senator should be: a bright, young, articulate statesman who leads by example," said Rep. Edward Casso, D-Thornton.

At a press conference today, Romanoff contrasted the work he got done in the state legislature to the work that's not getting done in Congress.

"Congress doesn't function much like Colorado - or the rest of America, for that matter," Romanoff said. "They don't have to balance a budget. They don't have to worry about their health insurance. They act as if they had all the time in the world."

"Well, they don't," he continued. "And we don't. Many of the issues we face - health care, the economy, climate change - are literally matters of life and death. So let me put this as plainly as possible, so that the powerbrokers and party bosses in D.C. can understand: If you won't get this country moving again, then step aside. We will."
