Subject: ACT 2010 Kickoff! Saturday, January 9th at Southglenn Library
Vorry,
Join us for our first meeting of the year, on Saturday, January 9th at the Southglenn Library, to kick off the 2010 Colorado legislature and hear some of the many things we will be focusing on in the new year:
- Continuing our fight for healthcare reform – statewide and federally;
- Immigration reform;
- Promoting the use of renewable energy in our state;
- Reform payday lending; and most importantly,
- Focus on our own state's fiscal crisis, an issue that stands to hit all our community members.
To speak on Colorado's fiscal issues, Carol Hedges, a Fiscal Analyst with the Colorado Fiscal Policy Institute, will discuss Colorado's future using the lens of our public investments. Carol uses data, fiscal analysis, stories and occasionally even humor, to illuminate the impact of our current choices in order for us to better answer the question, What Kind of Colorado Do We Want. She will discuss the most recent economic trends and state revenue projections and will offer an opportunity for discussion.
In addition to Carol, we'll hear from other ACT community members on the work being done on the issues they are passionate about. It will be an interesting and engaging discussion on where 2010 will take us.
Margaret Mead once said: "A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." And we are exactly that – a group of thoughtful people intending to affect change in our community, country and world. Now, more than ever, we need to voice our progressive values loudly, to engage our elected officials.
If you are like me, I know you envision Colorado to be much, much more. We are close to last in the nation on funding our public education; our state budget shortfall is directly affecting the basic functioning of state services. Colorado deserves better than this. If we don't stand up and voice our progressive values, then who will? We must continue the steady drumbeat of progressive change that started out more than a year ago.
There's a lot of work ahead of us in 2010 - but I know, together, we offer a better vision for our state, and with our combined efforts, will ensure a brighter future for Colorado.
2010 Kickoff! Reenergized Around The Issues
